Travel to Bhutan a magical country of myths, legends, folklore and medieval charm. Visit ancient temples and quaint hamlets sprinkled throughout its alpine landscape, still unmarred by billboards and traffic lights. View skillful archery contests, the national sport, see how the local crafts and textiles are made, and the adventurous may want to sample the unique cuisine where chilies are used as vegetables and cooked with cheese! Enjoy the nutty buckwheat pancakes and noodles. Attend a jovial tshechu (festival) in which Buddhist monks, adorned with stunning masks, hats and bright costumes; perform exciting religious dances in monastery courtyards.
During an active 3-day hike through Bumthang visit idyllic mountain villages and temples, and walk through buckwheat fields, colorful meadows, and forests of blue pine. Get to know the real Bhutan in this area known to be its heartland. Taste the local food and share travel stories over piping hot chai (tea) by the campfire. Continue to tropical Punakha Valley with its shimmering rice fields and mist-shrouded villages.
Celebrate local festivals with the friendly Bhutanese bedecked in chunky jewelry and colorful kiras (national dress for women). Photograph the swirling dancers in a sea of yellow and red silk skirts and masks. Festivals in Bhutan are genuine religious events and not staged for westerners. They are also major social gatherings where people travel long distances to join in the religious festivities as well as socialize with their relatives.
ACCOMMODATIONS: Stay in an eclectic mix of accommodations ranging from charming traditional boutique hotels with Bhutanese architecture and décor to well-appointed modern upscale and superior hotels, some with rustic ski lodge type interior. Enjoy the outdoors while camping during the 3-day hike.
