Boat races, lantern, music & tribal festivals celebrated year round
Amongst the many splendid gorges, magnificent rivers, towering hills and pristine rainforest, Malaysia’s National Parks in Borneo provide an unequalled setting for this adventure. Enjoy canoeing on jungle rivers, bird-watching, hiking, swimming in placid rivers and be lulled to sleep by the humming of cicadas and the soothing noises of the deep jungle, amidst giant tropical trees. Explore the world’s largest natural cave system at Mulu, sitting on top of a 180 million year old rainforest.
In the undisturbed, virgin jungles of Sarawak, where protected animals roam free, meet the Ibans in their longhouses. Traditional indigo tattoos, which can cover the elder Iban men from head to toe, are a sublime form of decoration and storytelling. Join these former headhunters in their daily activities of fishing, setting traps for wild boar, weaving, basket making, bird watching and animist rituals.
In mysterious, stunning Sabah visit the world’s largest orangutan sanctuary to see how orphaned baby orangutans are taught to survive in the wild. Tread lightly and silently while watching the giant turtles lay their eggs on the beach at night, on tiny Sellingan Island. Observe proboscis monkeys in the wild and abundant bird life on a boat ride through these jungles and wind down on an idyllic beach.
For the June departure, you may want to arrive in Kuching one day early to attend the Rainforest World Music Festival, an annual three-day music festival celebrating the diversity of world music, with daytime music workshops, cultural displays, craft displays, food stalls, and main-stage evening concerts. The festival features a wide range of performances from traditional music, to world fusion and contemporary world music. It emphasizes the use of traditional acoustic world instruments, although electric accompaniment instruments are common.
