This one-of-a-kind trip focuses on the animist cultures, tribal life, festivals, and the classical cities of Yangon, Bagan and Mandalay in this historical and ethnically diverse country. Explore the breathtaking ruins – the legacy of the temple building frenzy of Bagan’s Golden Era. Cross the Irrawaddy River by boat and drive along dusty, rough roads to arrive in the seldom-visited Mindat Mountains, deep in Chin country.
The Chin are highly regarded as skilled hunters and weavers. Due to rugged terrain and near isolation, these tribes and villages remain fairly untouched. Meet the gorgeous Chin women with their distinctive facial tattoos, hand woven textiles, silver belts and amber beads. Join these intriguing people in their songs and dances along with the Chin men playing their amazing nose flutes!
Drive past pine forests to Inle Lake, home of the predominantly Buddhist Intha tribes known for their one leg rowing, floating flower and herb gardens, villages of silk and cotton weavers and colorful tribal markets. You will also meet the friendly Pa O tribes with their striking checkered turban and the cheroot smoking Burmese. Visit Mandalay, the former capital and second largest city in Burma. View the stunning cultural and religious sites. Shop for gorgeous woven silks, marble carvings, tapestries, and gold leaf! Meditate at Shwedagon Pagoda during sunset and admire the dazzling bell-shaped superstructure.
In Kengtung photograph the Akhas with elaborate headdresses and beaded necklaces and chat with the striking black-turbaned Wa women and the silver and gold belted Palaungs. Enjoy easy hikes to primitive Aeng villages, or meet these tribes busy bartering in their lively markets dressed in traditional costumes and interesting headdresses.
FESTIVALS: Since 1986 we have taken avid travelers to participate in religious and animistic tribal festivals in remote villages and ancient sites throughout Asia. We took the first western group to the Naga New Year Festival in 2001! Many of our small group tours include colorful festivals. Here you will celebrate with the local people, learn about their ancient traditions and photograph these striking tribes with their vibrant costumes, ethnic jewelry and facial tattoos!
