Explore Brunei, a small enigmatic country with considerable wealth from its abundance of petroleum leaving its rainforest ecosystems relatively untouched.  Deeply religious and ranked high on the Human Development Index with a literacy rate around 93%, the country offers a unique mix of history, heritage and culture.  Cruise through the water village, hike in the rich rainforest canopy and view the Sultan of Brunei’s grand palace; the largest residential palace in the world!

Discover Malaysian Borneo.  The many splendid gorges, magnificent rivers, towering hills and pristine rainforests of the national parks in Borneo provide an unequaled setting for wildlife viewing and adventure.

In stunning Sabah visit the world’s largest orangutan sanctuary to see how orphaned baby orangutans are taught to survive in the wild.  Observe proboscis monkeys, Bornean pygmy elephants and orangutans in the wild with abundant bird life while adventuring on several boat rides through jungle waterways both day and night.  Enjoy bird watching, hiking, swimming in placid rivers and be lulled to sleep by the humming of cicadas and the soothing noises of the deep jungle.  In Sarawak, explore one of the world’s largest cave passages, sitting amidst the 180-million-year-old rainforest and visit Kuching, a charming water town with its colorful houses, boat regattas and museums.

Fly to peninsular Malaysia and view Kuala Lumpur from the 88-story Petronas Twin Towers and see KL tower, the 7th tallest (freestanding) tower in the world!

Festivals:

Hari Raya Festival (Brunei):  In the Spring - Shake hands with the Sultan of Brunei or the Queen when they open their opulent palace only once a year to the local people and westerners to celebrate the completion of Ramadan.  View the interior of the world’s biggest and most lavish palace up close!  Share a delicious meal served inside the palace and experience the festive open house as guests of the royal family.  Photographs are allowed inside the palace but not while meeting the royal family.

Harvest Festival (Sabah): In the Spring - the traditional Harvest Festival is a month-long celebration with roots in Borneo’s earliest records.  The yearly rice harvest rituals brought shamans or Bobohizans (ritual priestesses) in every village to thank Bambaazon, the rice spirit.  Villagers used the time to gather, feast, play sports, play matchmaker and settle disputes.  Stay at a world-renowned lodge to celebrate a small Harvest Festival.  Guests join local staff in an intimate atmosphere celebrating and honoring the deep traditions of this animist culture.  Taste the traditional food, dance and enjoy music and song with traditional instruments.  Photograph the staff in elaborate tribal costumes in Sabah and celebrate with the local people in a small traditional pageant.
